Stages Of Acne: Severe Acne

First the basics. Acne is characterized by inflammatory and non inflammatory lesions which break out on the skin, due to clogged pores or hair follicles. These lesions can be comedones, papules, cysts or nodules. Acne is generally seen breaking out during puberty, as it is at this time that the body produces an abundant supply of an oily substance called sebum. The excess sebum can clog pores and leave the skin feeling oily. Acne can be found in three different stages- mild, moderate and severe.

Severe acne:
Dermatologists all over the world agree that severe acne can be classified as the presence of numerous comedones and pus filled pustules extended till your neck. These pustules may be as large as 1-2cm. Severe acne can also be characterized by highly inflammatory lesions visible from a distance of 2.5m also. Acne conglobata, sinus or cystic acne are also classified as severe acne. It can be found in anybody ranging from infants to people in their old age. It can be found anywhere on the skin, that is, the face, arms, back, thighs, chest or shoulders.

Management of severe acne:
Severe acne can be treated with the help of oral medications. These medications are provided by a dermatologist and are usually taken from six months to a year.

Medication for severe acne:
1. The first choice of dermatologists would be oral Isotretinoin.
2. Apart from this, high doses of oral antibiotics for a period of six months or longer.
3. Females can be treated with oral anti-androgens, which will be suitable for them in the long run.

Generally, a dermatologist would use a combination treatment plan consisting of Isotretinoin and antibiotics, based on the severity of your acne. Severe acne is such a condition that requires immediate medical attention. That's why, please do not indulge in self medication!
