| Women vs. Men- Who Gets Acne the Most |

The study carried out by doctors at Birmingham School of Medicine, University of Alabama randomly surveyed a group of 1,013 men and women aged 20 years and older. The group was given a questionnaire pertaining to occurrence of acne in their individual lives. The questions included details about the occurrence of acne in their life and how did their condition fair with passage of time (improved, remained the same, got worse). The findings of this study were not too shocking. Most of the answers were on expected lines. Almost 74 per cent people reported that they had suffered from acne at some point of time or the other. Most had faced it as teenagers and the ratio of men to women was fairly the same. * In the age group of 21-30, in comparison to 42.5 per cent of men, almost 51 per cent of women reported development of acne. * In the age group of 31-40, as against the figure of 20.1 per cent for men, 35.2 per cent women reported development of acne. * In the age group of 41-50, as against the figure of 12 per cent for men, 26.3 per cent women revealed the development of acne. * And in the age group of 51-60, the percentage of women who experienced acne was 15.3 per cent, as against the figure of 7.3 per cent for men. The data thus collected by doctors pointed out to the fact that the chances of occurrence of acne were significantly higher in women than in men. Further, in a different section of the survey which included questions about the changes in acne during menstrual period, and their pre-menopausal or post-menopausal stage, observers noted that for 62.2 per cent of women the condition got worse around the time of their menstrual cycle. Observers also noted that the use of either over-the-counter medications or hormone replacement therapy did not bring much relief to the respondents. Of the 86 women who took such measures, only 10.5 percent reported positive results while the condition remained the same for the remaining women. The survey then proved that women were more prone to the development of acne. On most occasions, their condition either remained the same or worsened in the future. Related Articles
