Baby acne is a condition which resembles to break out
reddish bumps or inflammation of the skin in a baby. Baby acne generally
appears on the cheeks, chin and forehead. It may appear at the time of
birth or within 3 to 4 weeks of the birth. In fact, baby acne is quite
common. Almost 20 % of all newborns suffer from baby acne.
Baby acne is generally caused by the transfer of
hormones from the mother to the baby. Due to the minor imbalance in both
male and female hormones in the baby's system, red bumps in the form of
baby acne may appear.
1) The baby acne may also appear in the
form of whiteheads, blackheads and pustules. The little whiteheads are
surrounded by reddish skin and become more prominent when the baby
becomes hot and fussy. Any contact with the spit-out milk, wet saliva or
some particular fabric may further aggravate the situation.
) When talking about baby acne, it should not be confused with 'milia'
which is a skin condition for the new born baby. 'Milia' can occur at
the time of birth and causes redness in the skin. This condition fades
away within 2 weeks of birth. If the condition persists more than that,
you should better consult a physician.
3) Baby acne generally
produces no scars. If left undisturbed, baby acne tends to disappear by
itself within a few weeks. If it persists for longer duration, it is
better to consult your doctor.
