Birth control pills are used to control
pregnancy, its primary responsibility, as well as to treat acne in
women. These pills are capable of changing hormone levels in the body
and can reduce the acne causing effects of testosterone.
But, the
question is that whether acne can make pill worse meaning will the pills
be effective in controlling acne or not?
Before taking any medication for acne treatment, I would suggest that
you discuss it with your dermatologist to chalk out the most effective treatment
for your particular case of pimples. For further details, read Tips
For Reducing Pimples.
Increased oil
production can be caused by the body's androgen (male hormone)
production, which can be highest just before the menstruation starts. It
appears that low-dosage birth-control pills can decrease the presence of
excess androgens, thereby decreasing breakouts.
They work particularly
well when used in conjunction with other therapies such as topical
antibacterial agents or tretinoins. Many have noticed an improvement in
their skin after they did start taking birth-control pills. Thus,
low-dose birth-control pills can be an effective and safe treatment for
moderate acne.
However, there are a few problems with using birth
control pills to control acne. Some women may actually notice their
acne/ pimple worsen after the use of birth control pills until the
estrogen levels become dominant. Different brands of oral contraception
have different levels of hormones. Switching to another brand may bring
acne back under control. There are several brands that may help cure
acne but only Ortho Tri-cyclen has been approved by the FDA for treating
acne.
