Acne is very well a curable skin disorder. There are various medicines and therapies available to heal it.

You can avail medications in two ways, either over-the-counter (OTC) or through prescription. OTC medicines are those which are purchased by people from medical stores and are used by them without any prior consultation with the doctor. Whereas, prescription medicines are those, which are required to be taken under strict medical guidance and prescription.

These medicines are available in two forms. One is topical medicine, which is generally in the form of a gel or cream. It is applied on the affected area. Another is oral medicine, which is in the form of tablets or capsules, required to be taken orally. Here are a few over-the-counter medications used widely:

Benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is an anti-bacterial agent that is available in the form of cream, gel, and wash. It is available OTC as well as through prescription. It kills P. Acnes, the acne causing bacteria, and thus prevents acne. It is used to cure Acne Mechanica, Infantile acne, and Pomade Acne particularly.

Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and fabric. Almost 3% people are allergic to it. It can even cause dryness or peeling of skin.

Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is found in many OTC medicines. It is mostly available in the topical form. Apart from acne it is also used to treat other skin disorders like dandruff, psoriasis, calluses, corns, and warts. Salicylic acid helps fight acne by slowing down the process of shedding of the cells inside the follicles, thus preventing clogging. It also helps in breaking down blackheads and whiteheads. It is particularly used to cure Acne, and Pomade Acne. However, it may play a part of various other combinational medicines for other types of acne as well.

The application of salicylic acid may result in mild stinging. When used with Benzoyl peroxide, it may be overly irritating.
