Prescription Medicines To Cure Acne |
A right course of prescription medicines can cure your acne fast. But this is needed to be done under strict medical guidance. Some of the commonly prescribed medications are as follows:
Adapalene
Adapalene is basically found in the gel form and is applied once a day. It slows
down the accumulation of dead cells in the hair follicles and thus
prevents acne. It is used to cure various types of acne with no
particular specifications.
It is likely to cause severe itching, dryness and irritation in almost 10- 40 % of the patients. It may also
worsen the acne in the first month of its use.
Azelaic acid
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in whole grain cereals and animal products. It is available in the form of cream or gel, normally applied twice daily. It helps the skin to renew itself more quickly and prevent the buildup of cells that can plug pores, therefore reducing pimples and blackhead formation. It also helps to kill P. Acnes. It is particularly used to treat Pomade Acne along with other types of acne.
Its side effects are generally mild and short lived. The common ones include itching, burning, stinging, and
tingling. Lightening of skin has also been reported in some cases of dark-skinned people
Clindamycin
Clindamycin usually comes in the form of a solution, gel, or lotion, and is normally applied twice daily. It is used to treat various types of acne. Clindamycin phosphate is an antibiotic which kills P. Acnes, the bacteria that causes acne and thus prevents acne from developing.
The side-effects might range from burning, itching and peeling to redness and dryness. The severe ones might be diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and inflammation of the colon.
Erythromycin
Erythromycin
is an antibiotic packaged in gel, ointment, and solutions for use on the skin and is usually applied twice a day. It prevents bacteria from growing. Since acne is a bacterial infection, erythromycin is very helpful in treating it. It is used to treat various types of acne, wherever there is a topical antibiotic prescribed.
Do not use it while using something else on your skin (like harsh or abrasive cleansers, perfumes, make-up or any other OTC medications as it might become very irritating. Consult your doctor before you start using erythromycin. Also there could be burning, peeling, itching, redness, and/or dryness of skin.
Sodium sulfacetamide
Sodium sulfacetamide is a ‘sulfonamide’, which can be referred to as the earlier version of antibiotics. Before antibiotics and penicillin came into existence, it was used to cure acne. It is still used on skin for its antibacterial properties. It curbs the growth of P. Acnes, the bacteria that causes acne and thus prevents acne from taking shape. Just like erythromycin it is also used in various creams to cure various types of acne.
It is quite difficult to digest and people in a few rare cases have also died due to severe reactions to sulfonamides. Normal side effects include irritation, stinging and burning of the skin.
Apart from these, there are also a few other prescription medications available to treat acne.
