Acne scars are the reminders of the worst times suffered by you. They remind you of the deadly acne problem once faced by you. They are embarrassing, torturous, and even painful at times. To add to the problem, getting rid of them is not that simple a task. Modern day science has come up with numerous acne scar treatments but they are not applicable for all.

Acne scars are generally categorized in two types- (a) scars caused by increased tissue formation and (b) scars caused by the loss of tissue. You first need to understand that there is no single acne scar treatment that works for all. Your individual treatment would depend upon the type of acne scar you have. Therefore, your dermatologist is the best man to guide you over this issue. Moreover, treating acne scars is not a single day process. You may take up any treatment option; it would take months for your acne scars to fade away.

Your dermatologist may initially start off with topical treatments. If they fail to work, you may be asked to go for surgical methods which take months to heal. Also, discoloration caused after performing these surgical methods takes a few days before it goes away.

One controversy that has always surrounded most of the acne scar treatments is- do they really work? Well, the results of acne scar treatments can not be predicted. They may or may not work. The dermatologist may fail to get you the desired results despite all his best efforts. Scar treatment usually improves the appearance of the skin. But, if your expectation is total restoration, it is impossible. The main aim of any acne scar treatment is basically to provide you a totally acceptable look. To have a complete restoration of your previous look is not even a distant possibility.

Therefore, it is always better to have realistic expectations so that you may not feel disappointed later. Your doctor may suggest you surgical procedures like dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, skin grafting and others or suggest some topical medications for the same.
