A pimple is a type of skin condition that is the result of obstructed and/or inflamed pores. Acne is the prime cause of pimples, though other causes such as small pox also exist. Small pores are connected with the sebaceous oil glands under the skin. A 'follicle' connects the pores to the glands. The oil substances secreted from the glands carry dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A thin strand of the hair that grows through the follicle clogs up and as a result pimples start to appear.

For most of the people, pimples do not progress beyond the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads. However in some cases, the secretion of oil is much more, creating a perfect environment for a bacterium known as Propionibacterium to grow.  This bacterium is generally harmless but when it gets the perfect environment, it can inflame the skin and cause redness associated with spots.

In some severe cases, cysts can develop under the skin's surface. These cysts can easily spread the infection to the surrounding skin tissues. The end result may be a scar on the face. If this happens, a pimple becomes incurable.

The different types of pimple/acne are as follows:

Acne Vulgaris: This is the most general form of acne. It includes different types of pimples such as blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, papules, pustules and alike. These type of pimples range from mild to moderate.

Acne Rosacea:It is often confused with Acne Vulgaris. It generally appears as a red rash. It is confined to the check, forehead, nose and chin. The redness is often associated with bumps and skin blemishes.

Acne Conglobata: It is more commonly found in males and is the severe form of acne vulgaris. Its main symptoms are large lesions and widespread blackheads.

Acne Fulminans: This is same as Acne Conglobata but it affects the young men. Its symptoms are severe cysts and ulcering acne.

Gram Negative Follicultis: This is a severe form of acne characterized by cysts and pustules.

Pyoderma Faciale: This is a severe form of acne which affects only females characterized by nodules and pustules.

Acne is a disease causing the inflammation of the skin just like pimples. Acne are commonly referred to as pimple, spots or zits. As such there is not any difference between acne and pimple.
