Acne, also known as, pimple or zit is a common type of skin condition in which inflammation occurs in the sebaceous or oil glands located in the skin. This happens mainly due to the clogging of the pores in the skin by extra secretions which usually occurs during the puberty stage.

That is one of the reasons almost 85% of the global population has had some form of acne during their lifetime with the majority of them having had it when they were 12-25 years old. Though it is non-life threatening it is a major cause of embarrassment for teenagers and may sometimes lead to permanent scars or loss in self esteem later in life.

There are many ways to treat acne and acne-related skin conditions and almost half of these consist of taking antibiotics, prescription drugs, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid.

The other half are trying to treat acne and acne-related skin conditions by using alternative medicines and naturo-herbal products. There are many myths about a lot of herbal products being helpful in preventing acne attacks without any side effects. But two herbal products which have some kind of clinical proof in the form scientific evidence to treat acne are tea tree oil and green tea cream.

Tea tree oil is a natural oil, derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia, a particular type of tea tree found exclusively in Australia. It is a natural anti bacterial found to cure most skin ailments like acne and was proved to be like benzoyl peroxide in a 1990 study.

In fact it was proved to be more effective than benzoyl peroxide and it did not have any of the side effects of benzoyl peroxide. Application of several drops of oil directly on the acne has shown to be the most effective way to apply tea tree oil.

The other herbal remedy found to be effective against the skin conditions like acne is green tea cream. During a study conducted in 2003 by Dr. Jennifer Gan-Wong for the American Academy of Dermatology she proved that green tea works almost the same as benzoyl peroxide with almost no side effects.

So in conclusion while many other herbal acne treatments may claim to cure acne or reduce oils, these- tea tree oil and green tree cream, are the only two that should be considered truly effective against acne.
