Treating Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is a severe form of common acne. This condition arises due to overproduction of the sebaceous oil and accumulation of dead skin cells. In normal acne, small skin lesions arise in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules. While, in the case of cystic acne, the lesions are bigger and deeper.

The various treatment methods that are used for treating acne and are also applied for cystic acne are:

1) Topical treatments: Topical treatments are generally applied to treat mild cases of acne. Sometimes they are really effective in treating cystic acne as well.

2) Dermatological methods: Dermatological treatments in the form of micro-dermabrasion, dermabrasion, chemical skin peels, and laser surgery are very useful methods in the treatment of cystic acne. But, before taking the help of these methods you should consult a dermatologist.

Antibiotic treatments: Antibiotics are also used for the treatment of cystic acne. Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline and erythromycin are used for the treatment of cystic acne.

4) Artificial hormone treatments: Artificial hormones in the form of contraceptives are used for the treatments of cystic acne in case of females. However, the use of this treatment is very limited because it also has also some side effects.

5)Accutane/ roaccutane: For treating severe form of cystic acne, accutane/ roaccutane is used. Accutane is in fact a breakthrough in the field of treating severe cystic acne. However, due to its side effects, this method is used as the last resort.

6) Photodynamic therapy with ALA: It is a new, very effective method for treating cystic acne. Prior to the Photodynamic Therapy with ALA, Accutane is the best method for treating cystic acne. It uses light in blue spectrum with aminolevulinic acid (ALA). This process takes only 2-3 weeks. Above all this method does not have any side effects as well.

Since cystic acne is a severe form of acne and the medications used in treating it are strong, you should try these treatments only after consulting with a dermatologist or a practitioner.
