Photodynamic Therapy Pulls Off Your Acne |
|
Photodynamic Therapy is a newly emerging procedure to get rid of lesions
caused by skin cancer. It is quite an effective method to clear your skin.
It makes use of photosynthesizing agents, oxygen and light, to create a
photochemical reaction that selectively destroys cancer cells. In case of acne lesions, it is mainly used to enhance
the effects of phototherapy and blue light therapy.
The
photodynamic reaction between the photosynthesizing agents, light and
oxygen, kills the cancer cells and produces a burnt kind of effect which
heals in almost 4-8 weeks. It makes use of laser light because it is
coherent, intense and monochromatic.
However
there are some side-effects that may occur as the aftermath of this
therapy:
1. Itchiness
2. Crusting
3. Stinging sensation
4.
Peeling
5. Redness
Apart from these, there are a few things
that you need to take care of after getting the photodynamic therapy
done.
1. The treated area should not be exposed to the sun.
2.
Use a dressing over the treated area.
3. The lesion may blister after
the treatment which could take several weeks to heal.
4. Scarring is
normally minimal.
5. Loss of pigmentation may occur which may be
permanent.
Mainly used for treating cancer lesions, photodynamic
theory has emerged as an enhancement for treating acne lesions as well.
Though a new concept, the results are quite promising.
