Though the face is one of the prime targets of acne, it can affect other body parts too including your back. Back acne or bacne is not another form of this skin problem. Instead, it is used to refer to acne that occurs on the back. 2/3rd of the people suffering from facial acne also deal with some or the other amount of back acne. While bacne exists both- in men as well as women, it is men who are affected more by this problem.

How is it caused?
Bacne or acne on the back is caused as a result of clogging of the skin pores. There are times when the sebaceous glands present below the skin surface secrete more sebum than the usual. This may be an outcome of hormonal imbalance or some other problem in the system.

This excessive sebum along with dead skin cells, debris, dirt and several other impurities gets trapped within the skin pore. As a result, the pore gets clogged. This blocked pore, then serves as the perfect place for the causative organisms also known as P acnes to grow. This results in the formation of a pimple or a zit.

While acne on the back is caused as a result of blocking of skin pores, it is triggered due to various factors, skin irritation being the primary one. A particular form of this skin problem is known as 'acne mechanica' and is caused due to skin irritation. Wearing over tight clothing, using backpacks, rough back massages etc are some factors that could trigger a breakout on your back.

How can I treat it?
When you are looking for back acne treatment, you have more than just one option at your aid. Here are some of the options that you can use to treat bacne.

* Cleansing- In some cases, thorough cleansing alone may provide a solution to the problem. This is particularly helpful if you have blackheads and whiteheads on your back.
* Home remedies- Several home remedies can be used to treat mild to moderate forms of the problem. Use of soy sauce, tomato pulp and fenugreek leaves are some of the most effective remedies that you can put to use.
* Exfoliation - Exfoliating your back opens up the blocked pores and helps in treatment. You could use a scrub or a loofah for this purpose.
* Benzoyl peroxide- There are several OTC products available in the market that can help you treat back acne. Benzoyl peroxide opens up clogged pores and destroys the causative bacteria.
* Isotretinoin- This is a highly effective prescription medicine that is used for severe back acne cases. It can lead to certain side effects such as skin chapping, peeling of the skin, soreness and dryness of the lips.
* Laser treatment- This treatment makes use of focused rays of light to destroy the causative organisms and clear up acne. It is used for severe cases of acne only.
