Most of the teenagers
suffer from acne due to a change in hormonal secretion. A few people
believe that acne is caused by pollution or lack of hygiene or junk
food, which is not entirely correct.
These may be contributing
factors and may also worsen the existing acne condition but acne is
caused by hormonal action on sebaceous glands. These glands produce a
substance called sebum, which emerges on the skin through the pores.
When dirt and dead cells get mixed with oily secretion (sebum), they
provide ideal environment for acne bacteria to develop. This causes a
blockage in the pores and the pimples develop.
Adolescence is the time when hormonal
changes take place in a big way. This makes the occurrence of acne
very common during this time of one’s life.
Acne can occur in the
form of comedones, which are Non-inflammatory papules. They may occur
as blackhead (when open) or as whiteheads (when closed). Sometimes
they are inflamed, are sensitive to touch, and look like tiny,
pinkish bumps on the skin.
They may also appear as pustules or
pimples, which are inflamed, pus-filled lesions. Nodules are a more
painful variety of lesions. They are solid, large, hurt very much and
are embedded deep in the skin.
Another form that acne takes is that of
cysts. These are painful, lesions filled with pus, lying under the
skin, and are capable of causing scarring and immense pain.
Though there is no serious health risk
involved with acne, they may leave scars behind. It is true that some
people are more prone to acne than others. The exact cause of why
some have a larger share of acne problem is not known. However, a
possible reason could be different levels of hormonal activity in
different people. Another reason could be the genetic make up of an
individual. It is possible that some people are genetically prone to
acne problem.
Stress is also one of the reasons for
acne, and the teenagers who worry a lot see a higher occurrence of
acne compared to those who take things relatively easy. Therefore, if
you want to lead a life free of acne, eat right, keep stress away and
get more active.
