One of the most commonly used ingredients in OTC anti acne products is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is known to be a highly effective acne treatment ingredient. In fact, salicylic acid is one of the only four ingredients that have been approved by FDA to treat acne. This ingredient can be used to treat even the most severe forms of acne if used in the right manner.

The skin on your face comprises of numerous layers. If you are dealing with acne then the topmost layer of the epidermis becomes dead. It is important to remove this skin to treat acne. Removal of this dead and damaged skin creates room for new cell growth and reveals fresh and new skin. This is exactly what salicylic acid does for you.

Salicylic acid dissolves the protein that binds these dead skin cells to your skin. By dissolving the protein, it makes the sloughing off of these dead skin cells easier. This also accelerates the production of new skin cells and helps you get rid of acne.

Further on, salicylic acid also helps treat acne by unclogging the skin pores. It must be noted that blocked skin pores are the root cause of acne. When excessive sebum along with dirt and other unwanted material gets clogged in the skin pores, it results in the formation of acne. Salicylic acid unclogs these blocked pores and deals with acne at its root.

These days, there are numerous cleansers, lotions and moisturizers available in the market that contain salicylic acid. You can use any of these products to treat acne.

Agreed that salicylic acid can prove effective in acne treatment, but this does not mean that every product that makes use of this ingredient is just as good. It is very important that salicylic acid be used in the right quantity else it could have serious side effects. Redness, inflammation, extreme skin peeling are some of the side effects that you may have to deal with if you use a product with a higher concentration of salicylic acid.

The ideal concentration of salicylic acid in products that are designed for daily use is 2%.
